The Salted Table

A working kitchen and market on Highway 101 in Encinitas, opened by Sophie Machado next to Salt Culture, the boutique she co-owns. It sells seats at hands-on cooking classes, a membership, and the pieces from the shop. Before this build the store sold four classes with no dates on them, behind a password. The new site went live on October 9, 2026, the day the doors opened.

// the brief

Sophie wanted a calendar where a guest picks a class and a date, sees how many seats are left, and pays, with a waitlist for full dates and a cutoff for late cancellations. The booking app already in her Shopify store had no waitlist, and it kept limited-seat classes on a $129-a-month plan. She also wanted The Salted Table and Salt Culture to read as one brand.

// what we built

Each class has its own page, and each date its own seat count. Adding a seat holds it for 20 minutes while the guest pays on Shopify, and the booking is confirmed when Shopify reports the order paid. A guest can cancel from the confirmation email up to seven days before the class, and the refund runs back through Shopify without anyone touching it. The freed seat is offered to the waitlist, with 24 hours to claim it.

// the stack

An open-source content management system on a modern web framework, with Shopify behind it for products, cart, checkout, payment and orders, the platform her shop already ran on. Classes, dates, recipes and pages are edited in one admin, where site traffic and Shopify sales report side by side. The database and every image are backed up every six hours.

// what changed for them

thesaltedtable.co was a parked GoDaddy page until October 9. It now carries a fall calendar of eleven classes across three series (Little Chefs, All Chefs and Adult Chefs), three Salt Society tiers, private weekend tables, and the shop. A bar across the top of every page switches between The Salted Table and Salt Culture, and the site uses Salt Culture's type and buttons, so the two read as one shop.

The switch to Salt Culture sits above the announcement bar. Salt Society is the first button, because members get first access to the class calendar.
Every upcoming date in order, with the seats still open. A full date takes a waitlist instead of a booking.
Choose a class and the calendar shows only its dates. The Art of Pasta runs October 22 and 23, at $78 a seat.
Three membership tiers, each a Shopify product. Paying for one makes the guest a member and sends a welcome email, and members sign in with a link by email instead of a password.
Salt Culture's kitchen, table and scent pieces, in the same cart as a seat at a class.
Saturdays and Sundays are private tables, offered to Host members first. A group asks for a date with its party size, and the request is saved in the admin.
